Q

In a neuron what does the cell body do

A

Contains all the organelles including the nucleus and a large amount of rough ER to produce proteins and neurotransmitters

9
Q

what does dendrons do in a neuron

A

extension of the cell body which subdivide into smaller branched fibres call dendrites that carry nerve impulses towards the cell body.

10
Q

In a neuron what do axons do

A

The long single fibre that carries nerve impulses away from the cell body towards the axion terminal.

11
Q

In neurons what do Schwann cells do

A

surround the axon providing protection and electrical insulation. They are wrapped in layers around the axon

12
Q

In a neuron what does the myelin sheath do

A

forms a covering to the axon and is made up on the membranes of the Schwann cells . Membranes are made of myelin which is rich in lipids – neurons with this sheath are known and myelinated neurones – white matter

13
Q

What do nodes of Ranvier do

A

constrictions between adjacent Schwann cells where there is no myelin sheath. They are 2-3um long and occur every 1-3mm in humans.

16
Q

What causes cell death in SN

A

The accumulation of a protein called alpha-synuclein

17
Q

Symptoms of Parkinson’s

A

Tremors
Depression
Anxiety
Hallucinations
Memory problems
Dementia

18
Q

Treatment for Parkinson’s

A

Levodopa (drug to increase dopamine)
This reduces the symptoms and progression but doesn’t cure it
Deep brain stimulation
Using electricity to get the deep parts of the brain involved in motor function

19
Q

What difficulties do people with Parkinson’s face

A

Muscular-skeletal system problems
Chewing, swallowing, speech
Digestion
Mental health and memory
The cardiovascular system
