Cells of immune system Flashcards
what is the role of a dendritic cell in the immune system?
to act as an antigen presenting cell
what does a neutrophil look like?
it doesnt pick up the stain well and hence has neutral type of colour, it has a multi lobed nucleus
What is neutrophils function?
it’s the most common type of white blood cell, primary phagocytic cell in acutw inflammation, granules contain myeloperoxidase and lysozyme
what does a basophil look like?
stained intensily blue/purple and has a bi lobed nucleus
What is the role of a basophil?
releases histamine during allergic response and expresses IgE receptors on cell surface
what does eosinophil look like?
its granules stain red/pink and it has a bi lobed nucleus
role of eosinophils
defends against protozoan and helminthic infections
what do monocytes look like ?
have kidney shaped nucleus
what is the monocytes role?
differentiate into macrophages
What is the role of a natural killer cell?
it recognises virally infected and tumour cells and induces apoptosis
what is the role of a helper T cell
it recognises antigens presented by MHC class II miolecules, expresses CD4, major source of IL-2 and mediates acute and chronic organ rejection
What is role of B cells
they differentiate into plasma cells and are antigen presenting cells
whats the role of plasma cells
they are differentiated from B cells and produce large amounts of antibody specific to a particular antigen
