What are narrow spectrum antibiotics?
antibiotics that act on limited range of bacteria
What are broad range antibiotics?
antibiotics that act on a wide range of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
When given orally where are antibiotics absorbed?
small intestine
Where are significant amounts if antibiotics excreted unchanged?
faeces
How do antibiotics work?
act on bacterial cell walls, affecting the bacterial ribosome or by acting on bacterial DNA directly
What antibiotics work on cell wall?
Penicillins, cephalosporins and glycopeptides
what antibiotics affect protein synthesis?
macrolides, ahminoglycosides, tetracyclines
What antibiotics anti on DNA?
metronidazole, trimethoprim, fluroquinolones
what are general side effects of antibiotics?
nausea, diarrhoea and can cause failure to oral contraception , people can also become resistant to antibiotics
