Cell Tissues Flashcards
4 Primary tissue types
-Epithelium
-Muscle
-Nervous
-Connective
Sheet of cells that covers a body surface or lines a body cavity
Epithelium
Epithelial Functions
-Protection
-Absorption
-Filtration/Excretion/Secretion
-Sensory reception
Epithelium arrangement
Simple or Stratified
Epithelium cell shapes
-Squamous
-Cuboidal
-Columnar
Simple columnar (1 layer of cells) and often ciliated
Pseudostratified
Stratified squamous, rounded/plump cells are only found in the urinary system subjected to stretching (bladder)
Transitional
The top of the epithelium tissue
apical surface
The bottom of the epithelium tissue
basal surface
-Retain ducts
-Secretions empty through ducts to the body cavity or into body cavities
-Sweat and oil glands, liver, and pancreas
Exocrine
-Lose surface connection (duct) as they develop
-Referred to as a ductless glands
-Secrete hormones into extracellular fluid
-Then it enters blood or lymphatic vessels to weave through glands
Endocrine
-Study of tissues
-Complements a study of gross anatomy
Histology
What cells are attached to and supported by
Basement membrane
-Produced by cells
-Strength
- The two components are: Ground substance and Fibers
Extracellular matrix
-Composed of interstitial fluid, cell adhesion proteins, and proteoglycans
-Can be liquid, semisolid, gel-like, or hard
-Cartilage and bone
Ground substance
