Cell Membrane Terminology Flashcards
selective of what passes through it
selectively permeable
an energy-driven process where membrane proteins transport molecules across cells
active transport
a type of membrane transport that does not require energy to move substances across cell membranes
passive transport
the process of particles, which are sometimes called solutes, moving through a solution or gas from an area with a higher number of particles to an area with a lower number of particles.
concentration gradient
the movement of molecules from an area of high concentration of the molecules to an area with a lower concentration.
diffusion
the energy an object has because of its motion
kinetic energy
the movement of water through a semipermeable membrane
osmosis
molecular weight cut-off, which is a measurement of a membrane’s ability to retain solutes based on their molecular weight
MWCO
proteins that move solutes across a cell membrane against their concentration gradient
solute pumps
a process by which cells take in fluids and dissolved substances through the cell membrane
pinocytosis
a process by which cells engulf and destroy foreign substances, such as bacteria, and remove dead cells
phagocytosis
