Cell Parts/Functions Flashcards
Cytoskeleton
Cellular support and movement in the cytoplasma
Centrosome
Near the nucleus made of two centrioles (during cell division the centrosomes forms mitotic spindle to which the chromosomes attach)
Golgi Complex
Modifies sorts and packages proteins and lipids and delivers them to other organelles
Lysosomes
Digest bacteria, worn out organelles
Mitochondria
Power house of the cells main site for generating energy during cellular respiration (ATP production)
Plasma membrane
Selective permeability
Inclusions
Chemical substances produced by cells; not bounded by a membrane (ex. Melanin, glucose)
Smooth ER
Lipid synthesis, detoxification (has no ribosomes) it produces fatty acids, steroids, enzymes used to detoxify drugs
Flagella
Long cell projection used to propel sperm cells
Cilia
Short hair like structures on the surface of some cells
Ribosomes
Protein synthesis contain RNA
Microfilaments
Help in muscle contraction, contract cell shape and cell movement
Intermediate filaments
Reinforce cells and help hold the nucleus in place
Nucleoli
Assemble ribosomes
Chromatin
Stringy mass of DNA and protein
