CC7 Flashcards
Legionnaire’s Disease
severe type of pneumonia caused by Legionella pneumophila
Legionella
bacterial genus responsible for legionnaire’s disease; thrives in warm, stagnant water
Outbreak
a sudden rise in the incidence of a disease within a particular area or population
Macrolides
a class of antibiotics, effective against a range of bacteria, which includes azithromycin and is often used to treat respiratory infections
azithromycin
a macrolide antibiotic commonly used to treat bacterial infections, including legionnaires disease
antibiotic
substance used to kill or inhibit bacterial growth, typically derived from microorganisms
antimicrobial
any agent that kills or inhibits the growth of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites
Kirby Bauer test
test that determines the sensitivity of bacteria to specific antibiotics by measuring the zone of inhibition around antibiotic discs
minimum inhibitory concentration
the lowest concentration of an antimicrobial agent that inhibits visible bacterial growth
zone of inhibition
the clear area around an antibiotic disc in a kirby bauer test, indicating bacterial sensitivity to the antibiotic
resistance to antibiotic
ability of bacteria to survive and proliferate despite the presence of antibiotics
sensitive to antibiotic
indicates that a bacterium is inhibited or killed by a particular antibiotic
therapeutic index
ratio of a drug’s toxic dose to its effective dose
higher TI means
drug is more safe
selectively toxic
the ability of a microbial agent to target microbes specifically without damaging the host
