Case 3 - Tests Flashcards
what does confrontation visual field testing consist of
having a patient looking directly at your eye or nose and testing each quadrant of the patients visual field by having them count the number of fingers that you are showing. this is a test of one eye at a time.
how far away do you sit from the patient in the confrontation visual field test
3-4 feet away
what does the tester do during the confrontation test
the tester holds their arms straight out to the sides. patient looks straight ahead, and the tester moves one hand or the other inwards. the patient gives a signal as soon as the hand is seen.
what does it only measure
the outer edge of the visual field and is not very exact
what is the Snellen test
the visual acuity test is used to determine the smallest letters you can read on a standardised chart or card held 6m away
how is the Snellen test performed
you will be asked to remove your glasses and stand 6 metres away from the eye chart and keep both eyes opened
what are the results of the Snellen test
- the top number refers to the distance you stand from the chart - 6 metres
- the bottom number indicates the distance at which a person with normal eye site could read the same line you correctly read
examples of results of the Snellen test
for example, 20/20 is considered normal. 20/40 indicates that the line you correctly read at 6m can be read by a person with normal vision from. 12m away
what is the automated perimetry test
uses a computer programme to test an individuals visual field. you will sit and look into a dome-shaped instrument. your doctor will instruct you to look at an object in the middle of the dome throughout the test
how does the automated perimetry test work
there will be small flashes of light on the dome. when you see these flashes of light, you will press a button. the computer programme will provide your doctor with a map of your visual field. y
what happens during a tangent screen exam
the TSE can be conducted in your eye doctors office. you will be seated about 3 feet away from a computer screen. this screen will have a target in the centre for you to focus on during the test.
the computer will generate images on different areas of the screen. without moving your eyes, you will tell your doctor when you are able to see objects in your side vision. your doctor will use this to form a map of your visual field. this will help them determine if there are certain areas in your visual field that you are not able to see.
what does the visual Feld test measure
this measures your peripheral; vision. you will stare at a object at the centre of your line of vision. As you look at the target, you’ll note when you see an object moving into your field of vision or, depending on the test, when the lighted spot appears.
