Cardiovascular System Flashcards
What is the purpose of the cardiovascular system?
supply oxygen and nutrients
3 types of blood vessels
arteries, veins, capillaries
arteries
carry oxygenated blood away from the heart
capillaries
Microscopic vessel through which exchanges take place between the blood and cells of the body
veins
carry deoxygenated blood towards the heart
3 layers of heart wall
epicardium, myocardium, pericardium
pericardium
outer layer of the heart
myocardium
middle layer of the heart
endocardium
inner lining of the heart
4 heart chambers
right atrium, left atrium, left ventricle, right ventricle
4 valves of the heart
tricuspid, pulmonary, mitral, aortic
tricuspid valve
regulates blood flow between the right atrium and right ventricle
pulmonary valve
regulates blood flow from the right ventricle into the pulmonary artery
mitral valve
regulates blood flow from the left atrium into the left ventricle
aortic valve
regulates flow of blood from left ventricle to aorta
aorta
largest artery of the body
systemic circulation
circulation that supplies blood to all the body except the lungs
pulmonary circulation
flow of blood from to the heart to the lungs and back to the heart
P wave
atrial contraction
QRS wave
ventricular systole
T wave
ventricular diastole
What are the formed elements of blood?
platelets, rbcs, wbcs
What is the liquid portion of blood?
plasma
What is the purpose of RBCS?
-deliver oxygen
What is the purpose of white blood cells?
immunity
What is the function of platelets?
clotting
buffy coat
concentration of all wbcs and platelets in a sample of blood
hemostasis
- after a blood vessel is damaged, we have a vascular spasm, where blood vessels constrict to reduce blood loss
- platelets plug formation occurs where platelets clump up and create a seal
- in blood coagulation, a mesh forms around the plug and secure plug to the site, thus making the rbcs and platelets are trapped at the site creating a clot
Blood type A
-a antigens, b antibodies
Blood type B
-b antigens, a antibodies
AB
ab antigens, no antibodies
