What are the 3 stages of carcinogenesis
Initiation, promotion, progression
What are the check points ion the cell cycle
G1 cell checkpoint
G2 cell checkpoint
Spindle assembly checkpoint
What do oncogenes do
Allow cells to continue dividing
What do tumour suppresses genes (TSG) do
Stops cells dividing to stop tumours progressing
What are 6 therapies used to treat cancer
Surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormone therapy, monoclonal antibody therapy, talking therapy
Advantages to using surgery to treat cancer
Extend life of patients, reduce risk of progression, used to reconstruct
Disadvantages to using surgery to treat cancer
Not suitable for cancers of the blood system like lukemia or lymphoma due to the cancer being spread throughout the body
Dependant on the size and type of cancer
Disadvantages of using chemotherapy
May effect fertility, use depends on type of cancer and other factor, hair follicles destroyed
Disadvantages to using radiotherapy
Daily treatments Monday to Friday, side effects may occur depending on the typer of cancer and location
What 3 cancers can hormone therapy treat
Breast, prostate, endometrial
How does monoclonal antibody therapy work
Blocks signals telling cancer to divide and grow, and preventing cancer cells developing blood supply
3 examples of others treatment that may be offered
-stem cell and bone marrow transplant
-palliative treatment
-watch and wait
