Indications for Calcium Gluconate

A
  • Hyperkalemia
  • Calcium channel blocker OD (treats the hypotension/antidote)
  • Ionized hypocalcemia (eg, after multiple blood transfusions)
  • Magnesium sulfate toxicity (respiratory depression, hypotension)

Adult: Dosage for Calcium Gluconate

A

Adult: 1000 to 2000mg (10% solution), very SIVP/IO (tissue necrosis possible). Total max 4g.

Contraindications for Calcium Gluconate

A
  • Hypercalcemia
  • Digitalis toxicity
  • Renal calculi
  • Ventricular Fibrillation (except in the setting of suspected hyperkalemia)

A

Pediatric: 5 - 7 mg/kg IV/IO (10% solution) to a single max 1000mg, q 5-10 min. Total max 3g.
