C5 - Dipylidiasis Flashcards
1
Q
common tapeworm infection caused by Dipylidium caninum
A
Dipylidiasis
2
Q
- primarily infects domestic and wild carnivores, especially dogs and cats, but occasionally humans.
- causes dipylidiasis
A
Dipylidium caninum
3
Q
when was dipylidiasis first described
A
1758 by Linnaeus
4
Q
life cycle pattern of D. caninum
A
- gravid proglotids passed intact in feces or emerge from perianal region
- proglottids disintegrate and release egg packets
- larvae of typical flea intermediate host ingest egg packets; oncosphere hatch and develop into cysticercoids
- flea larvae mature into adult fleas which continue to harbor infective cysticercoids
- definitive host is infected by ingesting fleas with cysticercoids
- cysicercoids become adult and scolex attach to small intestine
5
Q
infective stage of Dipylidium
A
cysticercoids
6
Q
mode of transmission Dipylidium
A
ingestion of infected fleas or lice
7
Q
intermediate host: flea
A
- Ctenocephalides felis
- Ctenocephalides canis
8
Q
intermediate host: lice
A
Trichodectes canis
9
Q
symptoms of Dipylidiasis
A
- most are asymptomatic
- in heavy infestations:
1. visible proglottids in stool
2. anal irritation
3. abdominal pain or discomfort
4. increased hunger (polyphagia)
5. diarrhea
6. loss of appetite
7. allergic reaction
10
Q
rare complications caused by dipylidiasis
A
gastrointestinal obstruction
(nausea, vomiting and distension)
11
Q
diagnosis of dipylidiasis
A
- fecal floatation test
- gross detection and evaluation of proglottids
- fecal test for D. caninum antigen
- fecal PCR tests for D. caninum
12
Q
geographical distribution of Dipylidium caninum
A
- worldwide
- more common in warm climates where stray dogs and cats are prevalent
13
Q
who is at risk of dipylidiasis
A
- dogs and cats
- humans esp. children
14
Q
treatment for dipylidiasis
A
- praziquantel
- niclosamide
- epsiprantel
15
Q
prevention of dipylidiasis
A
- flea control treatments
- regularly bathe and groom pets
