- Ignorance
The root of saṃsāra
(mistaking the continuum of the mind for a self - to be unitary, independent, permanent/duration)
Connate and Imputed
- fixation on self of persons kleśāvaraṇa (skandha fixation, I, mine)
- fixation on self of phenomena jñeyāvaraṇa (takes objects as real, knowledge obscuration)
Three Characteristics of Ignorance:
- A cognition directedtowards it’s object
- The object is extremely unclear
- The continuum of mind is extremely unpacified or agitated
- Formation
The accumulation of karma
Generation of the primary mental afflictions of attachment, aversion and bewilderment.
Ten Nonvirtuous Actions

- Consciousness
The arising of mind through karmic imprints
- Name and Form
The coming together of the five aggregates
The 4 skandhas form, sensation, perception, formation, which are conceptually labelled rather than directly perceived.
- Six Āyatanas
Windows for the spreading of consciousness
- Contact
The meeting of sense faculty, object, and consciousness.
Mental directiveness
18 dhātus come in play here
- Sensation
The experience of contact
resulting in satisfaction, dissatisfaction or yearning, and neutral.
Aka pleasure, suffering, equanimity
- Craving
Attachment to sensations
Wish to gain or avoid, hold onto or lose
Crave desire, existence, momentary craving
- Acceptance
Undertaking activities to attain the object of grasping.
Equivalent: undertaking
- Becoming
The subsequent existence resulting from acceptance.
Aka existence, possibility
What one accomplished from undertaking (acceptance)
- Birth
The ripening of becoming
This is conception in womb
- Aging and Death
Ripening and destruction of the aggregates.
Instant by instant transformation beginning the moment after conception.
