BUD510 MW2 Modes/Mental Events Ch 1-3 Causes, Conditions & Results Flashcards
Primary Mind
That which is aware of the essential nature of an object.
Sensory: 5 sense consciousnesses
Mental: sixth consciousness (conceptual & nonconceptual components)
Not ultimate, for example:
The primary mind of sensation would perceive the hot and burning characteristic of fire.
Mental Event
That which is aware of the features of an object.
Cause
That which produces.
Equivalent: Thing
Direct Cause
That which produces directly.
e.g. fire producing smoke
The direct cause is the Immediately preceding moment
Indirect Cause
That which produces indirectly.
e.g. clay to vase (requires added factor); in moments, indirect is not immediately preceding moment, but rather the moment preceding that
Substantial Cause
That which primarily produces the continuum of its own substances as its specific result.
e.g. clay (leading to clay vase)
Co-operative Cause
That which primarily produces something that is not the continuum of its own substance as its specific result.
e.g. eye sense faculty, or the potter who moulds the clay vase
Object Condition
That which primarily produces a consciousness with the aspect of itself as its specific result.
e.g. blue
Dominant Condition
That which primarily produces its specific result by its own power.
Causal Condition
That which assists or aids the arising of its specific result.
Place this here and causal condition - e.g. eye consciousness that engages blue, arising immediately before eye consciousness that apprehends blue
Immediately Preceding Condition
That which primarily produces mere clear and aware consciousness.
Immediately preceding condition only refers to consciousness, unlike causal, dominant and object conditions.
Result
That which is produced
Direct Result
That which is produced directly
Indirect Result
That which is produced indirectly
