Breast Week - Anatomy Flashcards
What is the secretory tissue of the breast made of?
Lobes
What do the lobes of the breast contain?
compound tubulo-acinar gland
What does the compound tubuloacinar gland drain into?
Ducts which lead to the nipple
What separates the breast tissue into lobules?
Fibrous tissue
What are the suspensory ligaments of the breast?
Thick condensations of connective tissue extending from dermis to deep fascia over muscle
What is the basic functional unit of the breast?
terminal duct lobular unit
What does TDLU pass into in the non-lactating breast?
Intralobular collecting duct
Where does the intralobular collecting duct drain into?
Lactiferous duct
Where does the lactiferous duct lead to?
Nipple
What separates the acini of the breast?
Loose connective tissue
What are the secretory cells of the acinus surrounded by?
Myoepithelial cells
Describe the epithelium of the nipple?
Keratinised stratified squamous epithelium
Describe the core of the nipple
Irregular connective tissue mixed with smooth muscle bundles
Describe the lining of the nipple near the surface
Stratified squamous
Describe the changes that occur in the breast during the luteal phase of menstruation
Epithelial cells get taller
lumen of ducts is enlarged
Small secretions in ducts
What changes occur in the breast during the first trimester?
Elongation and branching of smaller ducts Cell proliferation (of epithelial cells of glands and myoepithelium cells)
What changes occur in the breast during the second trimester?
Glandular tissue develops with differentiation
Plasma cells and lymphocytes infiltrate nearby tissue
What changes occur during the breast during the third trimester?
Secretory alveoli continue to mature with development of extensive rER
Describe the composition of human milk
Mostly water 1.5% protein 7% carbs 3.5% lipid Ions, vits and IgA
Describe apocrine secretion in the breast
Lipid droplets secreted surround by a membrane with a small amount of cytoplasm
Describe mesocrine secretion in the breast
Proteins secreted in vesicles which merge with membrane and only release contents into duct system
What is mesocrine secretion otherwise known as?
Exocytosis
Where are the proteins in human milk made?
rER
What changes occur in the breast following menopause?
Less collagen and elastic fibres
Secretory cells degenerate
