Breast anatomy/physiology Flashcards
What does a breast lobe consist of?
A compound tubulo-acinar gland which drains through a series of ducts leading to the nupple
How does fluid drain in the breast?
Terminal ductules > intralobullar collecting duct > lactiferous duct > lactiferous sinus > nipple
What is the nipple coveredby?
Highly pimented squamous epithelium
What is the core of the nipple made of?
Dense irregular connective tissue mixed with bundles of smooth uscle
Which glands are present in abundance on the nipple?
Sebaceous glands
What changes happen to the breast in the luteal phase of menstruation?
Epithelial cells increase in height
Lamina of ducts becomes enlarged & small amount of secretions
What happens to the breasts in the first trimester of pregnancy?
Eongation & branching of small ducts & proliferation of epithelial cells
What happens to the breasts in the second trimester of pregnancy?
Differentiation of seretory alveoli, plasma cells & lymphocytes infiltrate connective tissue
What happens to breasts in the third trimester of pregnancy?
Secretory alveoli continue to mature, development of extensive rER
Reduced amount of connective & adipose tissue
What causes reduced amount of connective & adipose tissue in the third trimester of pregnancy?
Oestrogen & progesterone
What is breast milk composed?
88% water
1,5% protein
7% carb
3.5% lipid
