Brainstem Flashcards
1
Q
Where is the brainstem located?
A
- Continuous rostrally with diencephalon
- continuous caudally with spinal cord
2
Q
Which two cranial nerves do not attach to the brainstem?
A
- CN I: attaches to Telencephalon
- CN II: attaches to Diencephalon
3
Q
What are the two regions of the brainstem?
A
- Tegmental Area
2. Basilar Area
4
Q
What is in the Tegmental Area?
A
- Nuclei
- Sensory (ascending) tracts
5
Q
What is in the Basilar Area?
A
- Nuclei
- Motor (descending) tracts
6
Q
How are tracts in the brainstem usually named?
A
Usually named for their origin and termination.
7
Q
What are the functions of the brainstem?
A
- Acts as the target or source for the cranial nerves that deal primarily with sensory and motor function in the head and neck.
- Provides a “throughway” for all the ascending sensory tracts, descending motor tracts and local pathways.
- Involved in integrative (modulatory) functions such as: complex motor patterns, maintenance of homeostasis, and regulating the level of alertness.
