Brain Regions and associated structures (excluding cortical areas) Flashcards
Association Fibers (not in CNS review lecture)
Fasiculi
Commisural Fibers (not in CNS review lecture)
Corpus Callosum (Rostrum, Genu, Body, Splenium)
Internal Capsule (Subcortical white matter)
Projection Fibers; composed of myelinated axons and oligodendrocytes (located between lenticular nucleus and head of caudate and the thalamus)
Basal Ganglia
- Striatum- caudate, putamen
- Globus Pallidus- internal segment, external segment
- includes structures of diencephalon (subthalamic nuclei) and midbrain (SN pars reticulata and compacta)
Hippocampus
internal to parahippocampal gyrus (temporal cortex); composed of horizontal layers of neuron cell bodies
Thalamus (part of diencephalon)
ovoid nuclear mass, superior to hpothalamic sulcus between interventricular foramen and splenium of corpus collasum
Hypothalamus (part of diencephalon)
aggregations of neuron cell bodies and axons; inferior to hypothalamic sulcus, superior to pituitary gland and caudal to lamina terminalis
Epithalamus (not in CNS review lecture)
pineal gland (external)
Amygdaloid
Internal to uncus of temporal cortex, rostral to hippocampus, composed of aggregation of neuron cell bodies
