What is Bowen’s Disease?
A
- A keratinocyte cancer, also known as Intraepidermal squamous cell carcinoma
- Derived from squamous cells, the flat epidermal cells that make keratin

What are the Risk Factors for Bowen’s Disease?
A
- Sun exposure
- Arsenic Ingestion
- Ionising Radiation
- HPV infection
- Immunosuppression

How does Sun exposure cause Bowen’s Disease?
A
- UV damages DNA resulting in a mutant clone of gene p53, causing uncontrolled growth of skin cells
- Suppresses the immune response

What are the clinical features of Bowen’s Disease?
A
- Irregular scaly plaques
- Orange- red colour
- On sun- exposed areas
- Many plaques which are not symmetrical

What is Erythronychia?
A
- Intraepidermal SCC that grows under a nail and results in a red streak
- Later can destroy the nail plate

How is diagnosed?
A
- Dermatoscopy and Histology

What is the treatment for Bowen’s Disease?
A
- Excision
- Cryotherapy
- Currettage and electrosurgery
- 5- Fluorouracil cream
- Imiquimod cream
- Photodynamic therapy

How can it be prevented?
A
- Stay indoors
- Wear covering clothing
- Have high protection UV cream
- Avoid indoor tanning
