What is Actinic Keratosis?

A
  • A common premalignant skin lesion that develops due to chronic sun exposure
  • Actinic/ solar = sun exposure
  • keratosis = thick/ scaly

What are the features of Actinic Keratosis lesion?

A
  • A flat, thickened papule or plaque
  • White or yellow, scaly, warty or horny surface
  • Red or pigmented
  • Tender or asymptomatic
  • Cutaneous horn may arise

What is the Managment for Actinic Keratosis?

A
  • Sunavoidance, sun cream
  • Fluorouracil cream - 2/3 weeks course
  • Skin will become red and inflamed - topical hydrocortisone is given
  • Topical Diclofenac
  • Topical imiquimod
  • Cryotherapy
  • Curettage and cautery
