What is Eczema Herpeticum?
A
- Disseminated viral infection characterised by fever and clusters of itchy blisters or punched-out erosions
- Serious complications of Atopic Eczema

What are the causes of Eczema Herpeticum?
A
- HSV type 1 and type 2

What are the clinical features of Eczema Herpeticum?
A
- Extensive crusted papules, blisters and erosions
- The blisters are monomorphic and all appear similar to each other
- They are filled with clear yellow fluid or purulent material
- Often blood stained, older blisters crust over and form sores
- Lesions heal over 2-6 weeks
- Secondary bacterial infections with staphylococci or streptococci

How is Eczema herpeticum diagnosed?
A
- Diagnosed clinically
- Viral Culture
- PCR
- Bacterial swabs for microscopy

What is the treatment for Eczema Herpeticum?
A
- Antivirals (Aciclovir)
- Secondary bacterial skin infections with systemic antibiotics
- Topical steroids
- Consult an ophthalmologist with eyelid or eye involvement

- Herpes Hepatitis, Encephalitis, DIC, Death
