Bony Thorax Flashcards
Identify and classify the components of the bony thorax
The strernum ( breast bone)
And 24 ribs
What are the 5 parts of the sternum?
-Manubrium
-Manubrial notch ( jugular notch, sternal notch
-The body
-Xiphoid tip
-sternal angle
How many costal Articular facets are in the manuibrium
7 which all have rib attachments
How many ribs have VERTEBRAL articulations
All 24 ribs (12 on each side)
How many ribs have sternal articulation
The first 7
How are ribs classified
Ribs 1-7 are : true ribs because of sternal articulation
Ribs 8-12: false ribs because they don’t articulate with the sternum
Ribs 11-12: floating ribs because they have no anterior articulation
What are the parts of the rib?
-The head (articulates with vertebral body
-Neck (constricted portion lateral to head
-Tubercle ( articulates with transverse process; lateral to neck)
-Angle (where rib starts to turn anteriorly)
- Axillary margin ( the body that Is lateral of rib margin
- costal groove on the inside for blood vessels and nerves
What is costal cartilage?
rib cartilage that is 3-5 inches interior to vertebral end
Define sternal clavicular (SC) joints
They are located between the manubrium and the clavicles
Diarthrodial class
Gliding movement
Define sternocostal joints
Located between the costocartilage of ribs 1-7 and the sternum
Joint 1
Synarthrodial class
No movement
Joints 2-7
Diarthrodial class
Gliding movement
Define costochondral joints
Located between the bony rib and costocartilage
Synarthrodial class
No movement
Define costovertebral joints
located between the posterior vertebral bodies and the head of the ribs
Diarthrodial class
Gliding movement
Define costotransverse joints
located between the transverse process and tubercle of ribs
Diarthrodial class
Gliding movement
Where is T1 located
1.5 inch above the sternal notch
Where is the sternal notch located?
Between T2-T3 space
