Cranial cavity
Enclosed by skull; holds brain
Vertebral cavity
Enclosed by vertebrae holds spinal cord
-the cranial and vertebral cavities are collectively known as the dorsial cavities
Thoracic cavity
Enclosed by ribs and diaphragm
Diaphragm: main muscle of respiratory system- serves as border between thoracic and abdominal cavity
Mediastinum
Central part of thoracic cavity which includes the pericardial cavity as well as other organs such as the esophagus and the trachea
Pericardial cavity- contains heart
Pleural cavities- lateral parts of thoracic cavity contains lungs
Abdominopelvic cavity
Enclosed by diaphragm and abdominal muscles
Abdominal cavity
Superior abdominopelvic cavity
Contains most of the digestive organs along with the kidney and spleen
Pelvic cavity
Inferior abdominopelvic cavity
Contains rectum, bladder, most of the reproductive organs
- thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities are collectively known as the ventral cavities
