B- thalassemia is ….
decreased or absent B (Beta) chains.
What happens to compensate for the lack of beta chains in B-Thalassemia?
Excessive alpha chains are produced but unable to form tetramers. They instead bind to red blood cell membranes and cause memberane
How is clot retraction performed?
Platelets pull on fibrin threads.
- trapped platelets release factor XIII stabilizing the fibrin threads
• Edges of damaged vessel are pulled together
• Fibroblasts & endothelial cells repair the blood vessel
What occurrences cause each cell to be increased in blood circulation?
➢ neutrophils 60-70%(↑ in acute bacterial infection)
➢ lymphocyte 20-25% (↑ in chronic infection)
➢ monocytes 3 – 8 % (↑ in fungal/viral infection)
➢ eosinophil 2 – 4 % (↑ in parasitic infection)
➢ basophil <1% (↑ in allergic reaction)
