Biology Lab 5 Flashcards
What do you call organisms that are in capable of carrying out respiration in the presence of oxygen?
Obligate anaerobes.
Give three examples of things that require oxygen for respiration.
Humans, animals, plants.
What is an aerobe?
And organism that requires oxygen for respiration.
What do you call an organism that can survive with or without oxygen?
Facultative anaerobes.
Given example of a facultative anaerobe.
Bacteria
Humans and other aerobes need a continuous supply of what to act as a “terminal electron acceptor” for the chemical reactions?
Oxygen
What are the waste products of respiration?
Water and carbon dioxide.
What is the chemical formula for carbon dioxide?
CO2
What happens if you have too much CO2?
It produces acidic conditions that can be harmful to cells.
What is the general reaction for aerobic respiration?
C6H1206+6 O2 produces 6 CO2 +6 H2O + energy
What is Phenolphtalein?
A pH indicator that will change color from clear to pink if the pH is basic (or pink to clear if the pH becomes acidic)
What percent of CO2 does exhaled air contain?
3.6%
What percent of O2 does exhaled air contain?
15%
What percent of CO2 does atmospheric air contain?
0.04%
What percent of O2 does atmospheric air contain?
21%
