Bio107-lab2 Flashcards
Cell
building block of all living things
Tissue
a group of cells similar in structure and function
Organ
a structure composed of 2 or more tissue types that perform a specific function
Organ system
a group of organs that work together to perform a body function
ORGAN SYSTEMS: Integumentary
skin, epidermal, dermal
Integumentary function (4)
- Protects deeper organs 2. Excretes salts & urea 3. Regulates body temp 4. Produces vitamin D
Skeletal
bones, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, joint
Skeletal func. (3)
- Body support & protects organs 2. Levers for mechanical action 3. Cavities provide a site for blood cell formation
Muscular
muscles attached to the skeleton
Muscular func. (2)
- Contract or shorten- to allow for walking etc. 2. Generates heat
Nervous
brain, spinal cord, nerves, sensory receptors
Nervous func. (2)
- Allows body to detect internal and external environmental changes 2. Helps maintain homestasis
Endocrine
pituitary, thymus, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, and pineal glands; ovaries, testes, pancreas
Endocrine func. (1)
Helps maintain homeostasis, promotes growth and development
Cardiovascular
heart, blood vessels, blood
Cardiovasc. func. (2)
- Carries blood to and from tissue cells where exchanges are made 2. Antibodies and protein molecules in blood protect the body
Lymphatic/Immunity
lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, spleen, thymus, tonsils, lymphoid tissue
Lymphatic func. (3)
- Returns leaked fluid from blood vessles back into the blood 2. Cleanses the blood or pathogens 3. Lymphocytes act as an immune system
Respiratory
nasal passages, lungs, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi
Respiratory func. (1)
keeps blood oxygenated and removes carbon dioxide
Digestive
oral cavity, esophagus, stomach, small & large intestine, teeth, salivary glands, liver, pancreas
Digestive func. (2)
- Breaks down ingested food 2. Removes undigested food as feces
Urinary
kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra
Urinary func. (2)
- Rids body of nitrogen-containing wastes 2. Maintains water, electrolyte, and acid-base balance of blood
Reproductive
M: testes, prostate gland, scrotum, penis, and duct system
F: ovaries, uterine tubes, uterus, mammary glands, vagina
Reproductive func. (2)
- Provides sperm 2. Provides eggs and females house a baby
