Bio 123: PP8 pt 2 Flashcards
What are the parts of a flower?
-Stamen (male)
-Anther
-Filament
-Carpel (female)
-Stigma
-Style
-Ovary
-Ovule
-Petal
-Sepal
What are some characteristics of Angiosperms?
-Accounts for roughly 90% of living plants
-Widely range in size and form
-Have magnoliids; avocados, pepper plants
-Have eudicots; cabbage, daisies, trees
-have monocots; rice, corn, wheat
What are the characteristics of Monocots?
-have 1 cotyledon
-have parallel veins
-scattered vascular tissue
-fibrous root system (no main root)
-pollen grain with 1 opening
-flowers are typically in sets of 3
What are some characteristics of Eudicots?
-2 cotyledons
-netlike veins
-vascular tissue is arranged in a ring
-taproot (has a main root)
-Pollen grain with 3 openings
-flowers are typically in sets of 4 or 5
Stamen
The male part of the flower made up of 2 parts, the filament and the anther
Filament
Supports the reproductive organ, the anther
Anther
the reproductive organ of the plant, main job is to produce pollen
Carpel
The female part of the plant, consists of the stigma, style, ovary, and ovule
Stigma
Sticky tip of the style that captures pollen grains
Style
Stalk that supports the stigma and connects it to the ovary so fertilization can occur.
Pollen tube
forms within the style and carries pollen grains (male sperm) towards the ovules (female eggs)
Ovary
Holds the ovules
Ovules
creates megaspores (female eggs)
Petals
Brightly colored used to attract pollinators
Sepals
Base leaves of the flower that supports the petals
Unique characteristic of Pollen
Pollen has a hard shell and therefore can fossilize in the fossil record
Norman Borlaug
-Started working with the idea of genetically modified foods to increase yield
-Argues that we have to expand and increase our produce production
-Food security and food distribution is the main challenge of food security
Bioprospecting
Idea that we can go out in nature and begin to discover used of plants that will directly help the human species throughout the use of medical applications.
This has concern with regulation so that is is not over harvested and driven towards extinction. (Eucalyptus tree is used for a throat soother)
What is the Green Revolution?
The emergency of new varieties of crops that allowed us to have 3,000 edible species and 200 planted as vital crops. This helps increase yield to support the human population.
Co-evolution
Refers to two or more species jointly evolving because of their close ecological interactions
Co-evolution arms race
an ongoing struggle between competing sets of co-evolving species, genes, phenotypic and behavioral traits that develop escalating adaptations and counter-adaptations against each other
Angiosperms coevolution with insects, bats, small mammals, birds and pollination for angiosperms.
Symbiotic co-evolution
When both species are favored and a favorable relationship is develop between the two.
