What is colic pain?
Pain felt when the gall bladder constricts and tries to push out bile agasinst obstruction

Pure cholesterol

What are the risk factors for gallstones?
Female Fat Fertile Forty Obesity High calorie diet CF
What is the presentation of gallstones?
Majority remain unsymptomat Dyspeptic symptoms Biliary colic Empyema Perforation Jaundice
What investigations should be done for gall stones?
Blood tests LFTS Amylase Lipase WCC USS EUS CT scan (although doesn't pick up the stones that well)
What is the treatments for gallstones?
o If asymptomatic- do nothing o Try to break down the stones to smaller pieces o Surgical - Open - Mini - Laparoscopic *** - Single port
What is the first line of surgical treatment for gallstones?
Laparoscopic
What is acute cholectystitis?
Inflammation of the gall bladder
How does cholecystitis develop?
Obstruction of the bile duct by gallstones
What are the symptoms of acute cholecystitis?
o Right upper quadrant pain
o Nausea
o Vomiting
o Thickened gallbladder
What is the treatment for cholecystitis?
o Cholecystectomy (removal of your gallbladder) o Mostly done laparoscopically o Common bile duct stones can accompany acute cholecystitis - These stones can be removed endoscopically before or after cholecystectomy
What is chronic cholecystitis?
Chronic inflammation and fibrosis of the gall bladder?
What are the symptoms of choledocholithiasis?
o Abdominal pain o Fever o Jaundice (due to the blockage of the bile) o Loss of appetite o Nausea o Vomiting

Common bile duct stones
