A
Hyperplasia of transitional zone of prostate due to imbalance between oestrogen and androgens

A
Older men, typically over 50

Risk factors
A
Hypertension + diabetes

Symptoms
A
Hesitancy + terminal dribbling --> cardinal signs Others include: Nocturia Frequency Urgency Poor flow Haematuria Overflow incontinence

What does prostate feel like on prostate exam
A
Smooth, regular + enlarged
“fixed craggy mass” = cancer

Treatment if moderate-severe symptoms
A
Alpha blocker (end in ‘osin’ e.g. alfuzosin)

Treatment if symptoms + prostate >30g or PSA >1.4
A
5-alpha reductase inhibitor (end in ‘ride’ e.g. finasteride)

Treatment if severe symptoms + prostate >30g or PSA >1.4
A
Alpha blocker + 5-alpha reductase inhibitor

Treatment if pharmacotherapy fails

TURP (trans-urethral resection of the prostate)
