Behavior Mod Exam 3 Flashcards
The process of gathering information about the antecedent and consequence variables that are functionally-related to the occurrence of a problem behavior
Functional Assessment
Why conduct a functional assessment?
To Understand why a problem behavior is occurring. Upon doing so the problem behavior can be addressed with the appropriate intervention strategy
Following the problem behavior a reinforcing consequence is delivered by another person.
Social positive reinforcement
Following the problem behavior, an aversive stimulus is removed by another person
Social negative reinforcement.
The problem behavior produces a reinforcing consequence independent of another person
Automatic Positive Reinforcement
The problem behavior results in the removal or avoidance of an aversive stimuli independent of the actions of another person.
Automatic negative reinforcement.
One of the three major methods of conducting functional assessment where information is gathered from retrospective reports from the individual exhibiting the problem behavior or from others who know the individual well.
Indirect Assessment
One of three major methods for conducting a functional assessment where an individual observes and records the problem behavior each time it occurs.
Direct observation Assessment
One of the three major ways to conduct a function assessment where antecedent and/or consequent variables are manipulated to demonstrate their influence on the problem behavior.
Experimental method
What are two ways to conduct and indirect functional assessment?
Behavioral interview
questionnaires/rating scales
An A-B-C direct observation method where the observer writes a brief description of the behavior and of each antecedent and consequent event each time the behavior occurs.
Descriptive method
An A-B-C direct observation method that involves a checklist with columns for possible antecedents, behaviors, and
consequences
Checklist method
An A-B-C direct observation method where you divide an observation period into brief intervals of time and mark a
data sheet at the end of each interval to record whether or not the behavior occurred in that interval.
Interval recording method
These functional assessment methods include indirect assessment methods and direct observation methods
in which the antecedents and consequences are described but not manipulated.
Descriptive Functional Assessment Methods
These methods document all antecedent and consequence events that were observed in
conjunction with a problem behavior, but do not demonstrate a functional relationship between the
antecedents/consequences and the problem behavior because the antecedents and/or consequences are not
manipulated (an experimental analysis, or functional analysis, would be used for this purpose).
