ADHD definition
persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development
What are the signs of inattention in ADHD and how many are needed to diagnose ADHD?
- makes mistakes
- difficulty sustaining attention
- does not seem to listen when spoken to
- does not follow through on instructions/fails to finish activities
- difficulty organizing tasks/activities
- dislikes/avoids tasks that need sustained mental effort
- loses things for tasks/activities
- easily distracted by extraneous stimuli
- forgetful in daily activities
need at least 6+ for more than 6 months, 5 or more for 17+
What are the signs of hyperactivity in ADHD and how many needed to diagnose?
- fidgets, taps hands/feet, squirms
- leaves seat in situations supposed to sit
- runs around or climbs inappropriately
- unable to play or work quietly
- is often “on the go”
- talks excessively
- blurts out
- difficulty waiting turn
- interrupts or intrudes on others
What else is needed to diagnose ADHD in addition to the 6+ (5+ for 17) symptoms?
- symptoms present prior to age 12
- symptoms present in 2+ settings
- interfere or reduce quality of functioning
- not better explained by another disorder
What is an effective behavior strategy when dealing with an ADHD child?
direct contingency management (positive reinforcement), school based behavioral interventions, behavioral parent training
Oppositional Defiant Disorder definition
pattern of angry/irritable mood, argumentative/defiant behavior, or vindictiveness lasting at least 6 months and including 4 or more symptoms from any category and occurs with at least one person not a sibling
What are the 3 major criteria for diagnosing oppositional defiant disorder
angry/irritable mood:
1. loses temper, 2. easily annoyed 3. angry and resentful
argumentative/defiant behavior
4. argues with adults 5. actively defies or refuses to comply with rules 6. deliberately annoys others 7. blames others for mistakes
vindictiveness
8. has been spiteful or vindictive at least twice within past 6 months
Mild vs moderate vs severe Oppositional Defiant Disorder
mild: symptoms confined to one setting
moderate: at least 2 settings
severe: 3+ settings (everywhere)
What are the treatments for Oppositional Defiant Disorder
- problem-solving skills training (PSST) (did that person REALLY do it on purpose/do you have reason to be angry?)
- parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT) - authoritative parenting (behind wall thing)
Conduct disorder definition
a repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior in which the basic rights of others or major age-appropriate societal norms or rules are violated, as manifested by at least 3 of the following in the past 12 months
What are the symptoms of conduct disorder
- aggression to people and animals
- destruction of property
- deceitfulness or theft
- serious violations of rules (stays out all night before 13)
Childhood onset of conduct disorder vs adolescent onset
show at least 1 symptom prior to age 10; adolescent show NO symptoms before 10
What are the limited prosocial emotions that are present in conduct disorder? how many are displayed persistently over 12 months to be diagnosed?
- lack of remorse/guilt
- callous - lack empathy
- unconcerned about performance
- shallow of deficient affect

- multisystemic therapy - focus on understandign behavior in context in multiple risk factors (family, school, neighborhood, peers)
- multidimensional treatment foster care
