bacterial microbiology conditions Flashcards
what is impetigo and who normally gets it
highly contagious skin condition usually on the face, children
what organisms usually cause impetigo
staph A or strep pyogenes
what does the rash look like with impetigo
well defined golden crust with erythematous base
what is the treatment of impetigo
topical fusidic acid, severe: oral fluclox or clarithromycin
what complications can arise from impetigo
bullous impetigo, staph scalded skin syndrome (SSSS)
what is cellulitis
acute infection of skin and soft tissue
how does cellulitis present
hot, erythema, swollen, ill defined margins, usually on legs - local and systemic signs of infection
what organisms cause cellulitis
staph A or strep pyogenes
how would you diagnose cellulitis
swab
how do you treat cellulitis
oral fluclox or doxy, if severe IV fluclox
what causes type 1 necrotising fasciitis
mixed anaerobes and coliforms, usually after surgery
what causes type 2 necrotising fasciitis
group A strep (GAS)
how do you treat necrotising fasciitis
FBC, surgery
clindmycin + penicillin + gentamicin
what organisms commonly infect leg ulcers
strep pyogenes (GAS) or staph A
what organisms commonly infect leg ulcers in diabetes
anaerobes
what is the primary presentation of syphilis
painless, localised ulcer
what are the symptoms of secondary and tertiary syphilis infections
secondary: red rash, soles and palms, mucous snail trail ulcers
tertiary: CNS, CVD
what bacteria causes syphilis
bacteria treponema pallidum
how do you test for syphilis
blood tests and PCR
how do you treat syphilis
penicillin injections
what requires single room isolation
GAS, MRSA, scabies
