bacteria Flashcards
when and who was bacteria discovered by
antonie van leeuwenhoek – dutch draper
seventeenth century
where do bacteria occur
almost everywhere
some survive at tops of high mountains such as alps and others in hot springs
what are bacteria
saprotroph – feeding on dead animals and plants and making them decay
others are parasites and cause serious damage
size of bacteria
0.1-10 micrometres
small enough for gas exchange and excretion to be carried out by diffusion
how do bacteria reproduce
asexually by making a clone by splitting into two
have no gender
what kind of shape does a bacteria have
variable
in some cases linked together in chains or small groups
flagella
whip like tail like sperm tail which lash from side to side propelling the body along
is it multicellular or unicellular
unicellular
structure
body is surrounded by a thin cell membrane
beyond is a protective cell wall made of murein
some bacteria are surrounded by slimy capsule giving them extra protection and prevents them from drying out when in a dry environment
how do bacteria survive bad conditions
form thick protective coat round themselves known as spores
inside spore bacterial cell becomes dormant and may remain so for a long time more than 50 years
When conditions become satisfactory again the spore bursts open and the bacterial cell is released
why are bacteria very difficult to get rid of
Spores and rapid reproduction
list diseases of bacteria
pneumonia
Cholera
Titanus
