Dilation and effacement
2-3 weeks with early contrations before called LATENT LABOUR
ACTIVE labour has true dilation - water breaks
pressure against uterus - cervix causes it to dilate - enlarge and efface - thin out
affected ROM, woman can feel it
mucal plug - cervical opening
before active labour starts
placental wall has to open
normal presentations of the baby
ant - spine to stomach
pos - spine to spine
transverse - left or right
What comes out first in normal presentations
portion of the head because its cartilagenous - the vertex - meeting of sutures
Whats not normal
5-6%, vertex doesnt come first and larger surface area
atypical presentations

face
shoulder
breech - legs straight up or hugged - frank breech, butt down
- complete breech, bent knees
-footling breech, feet first, head last - long time in birthing canal which is bad
