Babies Flashcards
vision in 3rd trimester
responsive
gestational period is the development of which stage?
sensorimotor
fetal growth
first half - 10% full term weight - hard to recognize
second half - rapid increase
last three weeks - slowed growth - prepare itself before it gets expelled
labour 2
delivery of baby
urinary contractions that expel the fetus and placetal wall
prep for labour 2
fetus gets smaller
women prepares for uterine contractions - changes in body, false contractions
labour length
15-18 hours, first child is usually longer, after its half the time
why is average labour generally longer now? 3
mother increase in age(culture), increase body fat %
baby, increase in weight of first baby
doctor - emergency c-sections and epidurals - lack of sensation
four stages of labour
- dilation and effacement
- baby emerges
- placenta needs to be expelled (afterbirth)
- immediate postpartum
Dilation and effacement
2-3 weeks with early contrations before called LATENT LABOUR
ACTIVE labour has true dilation - water breaks
pressure against uterus - cervix causes it to dilate - enlarge and efface - thin out
affected ROM, woman can feel it
mucal plug - cervical opening
before active labour starts
placental wall has to open
normal presentations of the baby
ant - spine to stomach
pos - spine to spine
transverse - left or right
What comes out first in normal presentations
portion of the head because its cartilagenous - the vertex - meeting of sutures
Whats not normal
5-6%, vertex doesnt come first and larger surface area
atypical presentations
brow
face
shoulder
breech - legs straight up or hugged - frank breech, butt down
- complete breech, bent knees
-footling breech, feet first, head last - long time in birthing canal which is bad
delivery refers to
latent and active labour
birth difficulties 2
precipitous delivery
prolonged labour
precipitous delivery
less than 3 hours
not dialated enough, cervix and uterine lining not prepared, medical situation/environment
skull bones rapidly compressed - unattended birth
prolonged labour
only refers to active labour
more than 24 hours
increased chances of infection, suffocation and decreased O2
the baby is in the birthing canal and has left aqueous environment - now theres a delay into the airboure because you need to cut the umbilical cord.
adjustments at birth
cardiovascular system interaction with the respiratory system which was used minimally as they relied on the mother’s system through the umbilical cord
internal respiration age of viability
week 25 0 properly function
fetal development of CVS heart
week 3 - 2 endocardial tubes that fuse into the primitve heart tube
week 5 - it folds, twists and partitions into 4 chambers and development of blood vessles
week 9 - blood vessels establish
congenital heart disease
born with it 1/5000 holes between chambers incorrect number of valves complete absence of chambers can be detected and treated
fetal development of lungs
4 weeks - single pouch
16th week - bronchiole tree
3rd trimester - alveoli begin - not fully developed till after we are born
fetal lungs are protected by 3
foramen ovale, ductus arteriosus and ductus venosus
