B8 Photosynthesis Flashcards
What type of reaction is photosynthesis
Endothermic
What is the word equation for photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide + water ——> glucose + oxygen
What is photosynthesis
The process of making solube foods from carbon dioxide and water
What partt of the plant cells absorbs the light energy
The green chlorophyll in chloropasts
What partt of the plant cells absorbs the light energy
The green chlorophyll in chloropasts
If starch is present what colour does iodine solution turn
Blue/black
What is the substance that plants use to strengthen cell walls
Cellulose
Why does carbon dioxide increase the rate of photosynthesis
It will increase availability of carbon in the leaves causing a higher rate of photosynthesis until limited by another factor
Why do plants use glucose (3)
For respiratuon
Making cellulose
Making amino acids
Stored as oils and fats
Stored as starch
What is the rate of photosynthesis affected by
Light, concentration of c02, temperature
What do chloropasts make
Make chlorophyll
rate of photosynthesis is increasing whilst light intensity increases however the rate doesnt increase anymore. Why is this?
There is a limiting factor of either c02 or temperature which is preventing the rate pf photosynthesis to increase
Bhat happens if the plant gets too hot during photosynthesis
Acrive site in enzymes will denature so reaction of photosynthesiscant take place
What does photosynthesis use energy to do
Change carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen
What is the part of the cell that absorbs the light inna plant cell
Chlorophyll
What type of reaction is photosynthesis
Endothermic
What is the symbol equation for photosynthesis
6CO2+6H2O—>C6H12O6+6O2
What are the 5 things plants use glucose for
For respiration
To make cellulose
To make amino acids
To be stored into lipids or fats
To be stored as starch
Why do plants use glucose to make cellulose
To make strong plant cell walls
Why donplants use glucose to make amino acids
So the amino acidscan convert into proteins
Why do plants use glucose to be stored as starch
Glucose is turned into starch and stored in roots stems and leaves for when photosynthesis isnt happening like in the winter.
What would happen if a plant has too much glucose
Would draw lots of water in and swell up
What are the three limiting effcetors that affects the rate of photosynthesis
Light, C02, temperature
How is the amount of chlorophyll in a plant a limiting factor
If a plant has a low amount of chlorphyll (by disease such as the tobacco mosaic virus) this means the rate of photosynthesis is reduced because they cant absorb as much light
How can yiu chnage the light intensity of a plant in a lab
By changing hte distance of the lamp facing the plant
Why is the rate of photosynthesis low at low temperatures
The enzymesnneeded for photosynthesis work more slowly at low temperatures
Explain the experiment of pondweed
Place pondweed 10cm away from lamp
Switch on the lamp
Record number of gas bubbles produced in 5 mins
Repeat steps 2,3 with the pondweed at different distances from the lamp
