B5 Communicable Diseases Flashcards
What is health
Health is your state of physical and mental wellbeing not just an absence of disease
What are 3 factors that may affect health
Diet
Stress
Life situations
What are non-communicable diseases
A disease which isnt spread from person to person
What is a communicable disease
A disease carried person by person caused by pathogens
What is correlation
An apparant link between two factors
What does a casual mechanism do
Explains how one factor affects another
What is a pathogen
A micro-organism that causes communicable diseases
What are the main types of pathogens?
Bacteria,viruses,fungi,protists
What are the three ways white blood cells in our immune system mount an attack
Phagocytosis
Producing antibiotics
Producing antitoxins
What do platelets do
Rush to the surface forming a clot which dries into a scab
What do goblet cells produce
A ticky mucus to trap pathogens
What do ciliated cells have and what do they do
They have Tiny hairs like projections and they move in a sweeping motion to direct the mucus so it can be swollowed
What does the enzyme lysozyme do
Acts like an antiseptic to kill harmful pathogens
What type of pathogen causes aids
A virus (HIV)
What type of pathogen causes salmonella
Bacteria
Bhat type of pathogen causes gonorrhoea
Bacteria
Bhat type of pathogen causes malaria
Protist
What is cholera
A bacterial infection thats spread by drinking dirty water
What are the three ways pathogens can be spread
Water
Air
Direct contact
What type of pathogen causes TMV tobacco mosaic virus
Virus
What are the 3 viral (virus) diseases you need to know
Measles
HIV
Tobacco mosaic virus
What pathogen causes rose black spot
Fungi
What is rose black spot. What does it do and how can you stop it.
A fungus disease thst causes purple or black spots that develops on the leaves of rose plants. This can make the leaves drop off so less photosynthesis occurs. This means the plant wont grow very well. Gardeners can strip affected leaves and the leaves need to be destroyed so the fungus doesnt spread
What is malaria and how does it occur. One way to reduce risk
Caused by a protist. Caused by mosquitos. They pick up the malarial protist when they feed on an infected animal. The mosquito feeds on another animal and infects it by inserting the protist into the blood vessels. Use mosquito nets to minimise risk of getting bit by mosquito
How is measles spread. What does it do and how can you prevent it
Measles is a viral disease. Spread by droplets from an infected persons sneeze or cough. People with messles develop red skin rash and will show signs of fever. Most people vacinated against measles when young
What is salmonella, how do you get it, how to reduce risk of gettinng it.
A type of bacteria that causes food poisoning. Infected people can suffer from fever, vomitting, diasrheoa. Caused by toxins that the bacteria produce. Caught by eating food contaminated with salmonella. Most chickens and turkeys are vacinated abainst salmonella.
What is gonorrhoea, what is it caused by, how to prevent the spread of it.
Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted disease. Passed on by sexual contact. Caused by bacteria. Pain when urinating. Use of contraception prevents spread of STD.
