B2 - Plant Anatomy Flashcards
What is the term used to describe the transfer of water in plants?
Osmosis
How does Osmosis work?
Substances move from a high concentration to a low concentration along/against a concentration gradient
How does water enter a plant?
Via the root hair cells (osmosis)
What makes root hair cells suitable for absorbing water?
They have a large (hammer-like) structure that has a large surface area and volume capacity
How does water move from the root hair cells into the other plant cells (a.k.a the stem etc)
Water moves from cell to cell in the roots
It then enters the Xylem tissue, water then moves up the vessel into the leaves
Water is then moved from the Xylem tissue into air spaces in leafs
Where does the water go/what is it used for once it reaches the leaf tissue?
Some is evaporated (transpiration) at the Stoma
Some is used in photosynthesis to make sugars
