B2 - Cells Flashcards
What part do cells play in an organism?
Organelles form cells Cells form tissue Tissue forms organs Organs form organ systems Organ systems for the organism
What is an organelle?
A specialised structure within a living cell. E.g the nucleus
What cell structures are present in a plant cell?
Nucleus Mitochondrion Ribosome Cytoplasm Chloroplast Tonoplast Vacuole Cell wall Cell membrane
What is the function of the nucleus?
It contains the DNA of the organism and controls the cells activities
What is the function of the mitochondria?
It is the site of aerobic respiration, this is the reaction that releases energy
What is the function of the cytoplasm?
Where the reaction takes place within a cell (the material within the cell)
What is the function of the cell membrane?
It controls what goes in and out of the cell
What is the function of the cell wall?
What is it made of?
It maintains the shape of the cell
Made out of cellulose
What is the function of the vacuole?
It is the storage site for food
Helps the cell be turgid
What is the function of the chloroplast?
It is the site of photosynthesis, this is the reaction in which sugar is made.
Filled with green pigment (chlorophyll) that absorbs light
What is the function of the ribosome?
Involved in photosynthesis
What features does a sperm cell posses and what are their functions?
Flagellum - Tail used to swim
Mitochondria - Energy for the cell
Haploid Nucleus - Contains the 1 set of chromosomes (23)
Acrosome - Head of sperm that contains digestive enzymes that break down the egg
What are the features of an egg cell and what are their functions?
Haploid nucleus - Contains the 1 set of chromosomes (23)
Cell membrane - Maintains cell shape
Cytoplasm - Site of reactions within the cell
