B2 - Cell Division Flashcards
What types of cells are produced from mitosis?
New body cells
What cells are produced as a result of meiosis?
Gametes
Does meiosis contain 1 or 2 organisms? Is it a sexual or asexual process?
Sexual - 2 organisms
Where does meiosis take place?
In the ovaries or testes
Where does mitosis take place?
Within the cells of the body or bacterium etc
Are the cells genetically identical or different in meiosis?
Genetically different
Are the clones genetically identical or different in mitosis?
Genetically identical
What are the two types of cell division? What do they entail?
Sexual - Containing 2 organisms
Asexual - Contains only 1 organism that splits itself into 2 after growth
What type of reproduction is mitosis?
Asexual
How many divisions take place in mitosis?
1 as there needs to be a diploid cell not a haploid gamete
How many divisions are their amongst the cells?
2 as the diploid cell needs to grow, split, then split into 2(4) gamete sex cells
Why is meiosis needed?
To produce haploid gametes (sex cells)
What type of reproduction is meiosis?
Sexual
How many daughter cells are produced in meiosis?
4 haploid
Describe the process of Mitosis…
It is an asexual process that only contains one organism and is needed to produce genetically identical cells that replicate the parents genes and DNA
The DNA from a diploid (containing 2 sets of chromosomes) body cell of the organism is copied, and the cell grows larger
This diploid body cell then splits into two daughter cells that are both diploid and contain two sets of chromosomes
This process repeats and repeats
