B2 - Microscopes Flashcards
What does a microscope do?
It magnifies a small object to be seen in greater detail
What is magnification?
When a specimen or object is enlarged to produce a larger image
What is resolution?
The minimum distance between two objects or points that are close together but can be seen as being separate
What is 1cm in mm?
10mm
What is 1mm in micrometers?
1000micrometres
What is 1micrometre in nanometres?
1000nanometres
What is 1nanometres in pikometres?
1000pikometres
What is the formula for microscope equations?
Image on top of triangle!
Image = Magnification X Specimen Size
Magnification = Image / Specimen Size
Specimen Size = Image / Magnification
What is the measurement for magnification?
There isn’t one, just use x e.g. X1000
Facts about light microscopes…
Uses visible light to view small objects in detail
You can view living organisms
Images are in colour
Maximum magnification = X1500
Facts about election microscopes…
Uses a beam of electrons to create an image
Magnification is approx = X500,000
2 types of Electron Microscopes:
- transmission; Produces a 2D image
- scanning; Produces a 3D image
