The preserved remains of an organism that lived a long time ago

A
The total number of records kept on present fossils

Why do gaps exist in the fossil record?
A
Because: not all fossils have been discovered yet, not all organisms can be fossilized and fossils found can be sometimes damaged or only part of the organism
