B19 (Ecosystems) Flashcards
Food Security (1)
- Having enough food to feed the population
Biological factors effecting food security (6)
1) birth rates rising
2) as diets change the demand for certain foods change
3) farming effecting by new pests and pathogens
4) Environmental changes
5) input costs of farming may be too expensive
6) conflicts may effect availabilty
Effects of overfishing
- fish stocks decline and it effects the food chain
Ways to maintain fish stocks (2)
Fishing Quotas- limit number or size of fish that can be caught
Net Size- increase mesh size to let unwanted fish go through
How is food production made more efficient? (2)
- limit movement of livestock to use more of the energy on growth ext
- keeping in temperature controlled environment reduces energy from livestock to the environment
Examples of why farming is considered unethical (3)
1) Calves and Chicken are factory farmed and raised in small pens
2) Fishes factory farmed in cages where movement is restricted
3) Animals are fed high-protein diets to increase growth
Effects of unethical farming (2)
- disease spreads quickly
- uncomfortable conditions if cruel
