B14 Struggles Flashcards
Differences between plant cutting and tissue culture (2)
- tradition cutting uses more of stem + root than tissue culture
- cuttings yield 100s as tissue yields 1000s
Similarities of cloning plants and animals (2)
- offspring genetically identical
- both fast and reliable
Differences between cloning plants/animals (2) + But… (1)
- cloning plant much quicker
- raw materials different: plant from adult cell, animal from embryo
But… adult cell cloning may be possible in future for animals
Why is plant and animal cloning effective for developing countries? (1)
- the high yield of animal and plants is valued due to the incline of demand
Why is plant cloning more accepted? (1)
- around for longer so more time for people to accept it
Stages of Genetic Engineering transfer step by step (4)
1) Human cell with characteristic and bacterium with plasmid
2) Grow both using enzyme
3) Characteristic from human inserted into plasmidd vector by another enzyme
4) Multiply rapidly and characteristic switched on then harvested
Advantages of using genetic engineering (3)
- pure
- relatively cheap
- ready whenever
Disadvantages of plant genetic engineering (3)
- don’t know effects on humans
- cross breeding
- pesticide resistant
Advantages of GM crops in developing countries (4)
- increase yield
- short stems to reduce wind damage
- draught resistant
- pesticide inheritance
How can you tell if different breeds are the same species of animal? (1)
- breed them and they will be fertile
Important thing after first breeding stage when breeding for desirable characteristics
- breed the offspring with best desirable products
- carry on for generations
