B12 (Homeostasis in Action) Flashcards
What are waste Product? + 2 main waste products
- Products from chemical reactions in the cells
- urea and carbon dioxide
What effects does the Co2 acidic solution have on your body?
Effects the working rate of enzymes
What is urea and how is it produced?
- excess amino acids in the body
- when you eat more protein or tissues worn out
How is urea removed?
- filtered out of your blood through the kidneys
- passed out through the urine
Deamination
Removal of the amino group from animo acids which converts into ammonia
No control of loss of water/mineral ions
- water leaves lungs when you exhale
- water, mineral ions lost in sweat
Control of loss of water/mineral ions
The water and mineral ions are maintained in the blood by narrow limits when lost in the urine
How does the body controls your temperature?
- receptors detect small changes
- thermoregulatory centre send impulses to release energy
How does your body cool?
- vasodilation when capillaries dilate so blood to surface of skin to release heat
- radiation
- increase sweat for evaporation
- hair lies flat to stop insulation
How does your body keep warm?
- vasoconstriction when your capillaries constrict and go away from surface to reduce heat loss
- less sweat
- muscles contract causing shivering
- increase respiration, increase energy
Where are mineral salts found?
Kidneys
If you have kidney, what chemical will be found in your urine?
Protein
If water content too high
- receptors in brain
- coordination centres retrieve info to make a response
- pituitary gland releases less ADH, less water reabsorbed in blood
- decreases
If water content too low
- receptors in brain
- coordination centres retrieve info to make a response
- pituitary gland releases more ADH, more water reabsorbed in blood
- increases
Dialysis + adv/disadv
- blood flows through machine to remove waste products (urea) through diffusion
Adv- readily available, regular lifestyle, valuable time
Disadv- regular sessions, 4 hours, special diet, exspensive
