4 ways to treat cardiovascular diseases?
Stent
Statin
Repleace faulty valves
Transplant
Advantages of stents
Less serious surgery
Widens the artery
Disadvantages of stents
Risk of infection, blood clots and damage to blood vessels
Advantages of statins
Effective
No surgery
Can prevent CHD from developing
Disadvantages of statins
Side effects
Cannot cure CHD
Advantages of replacing faulty heart valves
Allows contol of blood flow to the heart
Long term cure
Disadvantages of replacing faulty heart valves
Risk of infection and blood loss
Major surgery
Advantages of heart transplants
Long term cure for most cardiovascular diseases
Disadvantages of heart transplants
Transplant can be rejected by the body
Major surgery
Recipient must take immunosuppressants for the rest of their lives
What are artificial hearts used for?
