What is atherosclerosis?
Formation of fats, cholesterol and other substances building up in / on the artery walls.
What is this build up called?
Plaque
What does plaque cause/do?
Causes arteries to narrow which blocks the blood flow and plaque busting leads to a blood clot
What is coronary heart disease?
Fatty plaque ruptures, cholesterol is released and a blood clot is formed
What does this blood clot cause?
It’s blocks the blood/oxygen supply to the heart and this means none is being received via the heart - ISCHAEMIC - the blood may be permanently damaged and a myocardial infarction may occur
What is chest pain known as?
Angina
Who is at risk of developing atherosclerosis or CHD?
People who:
Increasing age
Lack exercise
Smoke
Obesity
Alcohol consumption
Family history
High fat diet
