ASIA Impairment Scale - Quiz in neuro PPT Flashcards
What are the 5 levels of the ASIA scale? What does each level mean?
A: Complete. No sensory or motor function is preserved in sacral segments S4-S5
B: Sensory Incomplete. Sensory but not motor function is preserved below the neurologic level and extends through sacral segments S4-S5
C: Motor Incomplete. Motor function is preserved below the neurologic level, and most key muscles below the neurologic level have a muscle grade less than 3
D: Motor Incomplete. Motor function is preserved below the neurologic level, and most key muscles below the neurologic level have a muscle grade grater than or equal to 3
E: normal: sensory and motor functions are normal
What is the motor level?
motor level is the most caudal key muscles that have muscle strength of 3 or greater with the superior segment tested as normal or 5
What is the sensory level?
the sensory level is determined by the most caudal dermatome with normal score of 2/2 for prinprick and light touch
what is the motor scoring index?
testing each key muscle using 0-5 scoring, with a total of 25 per extremity for a total possible score of 100
What are the key muscles for the UE tested with the ASIA scale?
C5: elbow flexors C6: wrist extensors C7: elbow extensors C8: finger flexors to the middle finger T1: small finger abductors
What are the key muscles for the LE tested with the ASIA scale?
L2: hip flexors L3: knee extensors L4: ankle dorsiflexors L5: long toe extensors S1: ankle plantar flexors
What sensory tests are used for the ASIA scale?
- light touch
2. pin prick
What is the scale used for the sensory testing with the ASIA scale?
0 absent
1 Impaired/hyperesthesia
2 intact
What are the sensory sites for testing C2-C8?
C2 Occipital protruberence C3 supraclavicular fossa C4 top of AC joint C5 lateral side of antecubital fossa C6 thumb C7 middle finger C8 little finger
What are the sensory sites for testing T1-T12?
T1 medial side of antecubital fossa T2 apex of axilla T3 third intercostal space T4 fourth intercostal space at nipple line T5 fifth intercostal space (between T4 and T6) T6 sixth intercostal space at level of xiphisterum T7 seventh intercostal space T8 eigth intercostal space T9 ninth intercostal space T10 10th intercostal space or UMBILICUS T11 11th intercostal space T12 midpoint of inguinal ligament
What are the sensory sites for L1-S5?
L1 half the distance between T12 and L2 L2 midanterior thigh L3 medial femoral condyle L4 medial malleolus L5 dorsum of foot at third metatarsophalangeal joint S1 lateral heel S2 popliteal fossa in the midline S3 ischial tuberosity S4-5 perianal area
What is the neurologic level?
Most caudal segment of the spinal cord with both normal sensory and motor function (≥ 3/5 with rostral segments 5/5) on both sides of the body
How do you choose the motor level for T2-L1?
T2-L1 do not have standard motor tests so you go with the sensory level
