Asepsis Flashcards
Factors that increase the suseptability of infection
age stress hereditary medical therapies nutrition illness
When should you wash your hands
before eating
after touching any body substances
before and after using a bedpan
always before giving care
To perform proper hand hygeine the nurse needs to
wash hands with soap then use an alcohol based hand rub
What are the measures that can reduce suseptability to infection
hygeine nutrition fluid sleep stress immunizations
Antiseptics are used for
skin or tissue
Disinfectants are used for
inanimate objects
Airborne precautions are used for patients with
suspected or has an illness transmitted by airborne droplet nuclei smaller than 5 microns
What are some examples of illnesses that are airborne with smaller than 5 micron njuclei
measles
varicella
TB
Droplet precautions are used for patients with or suspected illnesses with particle droplets larger than
5 microns
What are the principles of surgical asepsis
all objects used ina sterile field must be sterile
Sterile objects become unsterile when touched by unsterile things
sterile objects that are out of sight or beelow waist/table level are considered unsterile
prolonged exposure to airborne microorganisms can cause items to become unsterile
fluids flow inthe direction of gravity
if moisture passes through/into the sterile field it is unsterile
the edges of the sterile field are not sterile (1inch)
the skin cannot be sterilized
