What are the stages of illness behavior
Stage 1: Symptom experience
The client believes something is wrong and may interpret a symptom to mean something serious
Stage 2: Assumption of the sick role
The client accepts the sick role and seeks confirmation but not necessarily from healthcare providers, they
may try self-treatment first
Stage 3: Medical care contact
The client seeks advice of a health professional, is looking for reassurance and validation
Stage 4: Dependent client role
The client becomes dependent on the professional for help and looks to the professional for management of the illness
Stage 5: Recovery or rehabilitation
Client relinquishes the dependent role
Resumes former roles and responsibilities
May include adapting to a disability
