arterial thrombosis and anti platelet drugs Flashcards
what is atherosclerosis?
not the same as arterial thrombosis
damage to the endothelium
recruitment of foamy macrophages rich in cholesterol
forms plaques rich in cholesterol
stable atherosclerotic plaques?
hyalinised and calcified
unstable plaques
plaques rupture, platelets are recruited and cause acute thrombosis
plaque ruptures are more likely in high pressure environment of arteries
y
platelets formed in the bone marrow by?
budding from megakaryocytes
what chemicals do platelets secrete
ADP, TXA A2
leads to aggregation of platelets at the site of injury
y
aspirin works by ?
inhibiting cycloo oxygenase w which is necessary to produce TXA2
side effects?
bleeding, blockage of production of prostaglandins, GI ulceration and bronchospasm
clopidogrel
ADP receptor antagonists
dipyridamole
phosphodiesterase inhibitor - reduces production of camp, which is a second messenger in platelet activation
